HOW TO DETECT A CONCEALED WEAPON

While realizing their plans, criminals carry out actions which can be spotted by an attentive observer. By a number of signs one can detect those, who try to conceal weapons.

First of all, one should pay attention to those who hold various things - briefcases, suitcases, bags, diplomats, packages, guitar and violin cases (especially if the things are carried with great care) – it may indicate the presence of arms.

One should keep in mind, that modern fire-arms can be indistinguishable from a spectacles case or a smoke-pipe. There are handguns, which can be hidden in a thick leather glove, a lady”s handbag or a folder.

One should also examine clothing that people wear, paying attention to the following:

  • Big size clothes, suspiciously spacious and bulging, hanging in lose folds to avoid any bulge from a gun or holster.
  • Clothes which puff out in places, where arms are usually carried – under armpits, on the breast, waist, hips, shins. One should also bear in mind, that a handgun can be carried tucked in a boot-top.
  • A skew of a jacket or trousers which may indicate the presence of arms or other heavy things in the pockets.
  • Clothes which do not correspond to the weather. It is impossible to conceal a handgun under a T-shirt. Therefore, despite of hot weather, one has to put on a raincoat or a jacket or an untucked polo over a tucked in T-shirt for the purpose. A usual way to hide a handgun in summer is to wear a light waistcoat with a lot of pockets. In winter, it is fairly easy to conceal a handgun due to all of the layers people wear. But it is much more difficult to take it out. Therefore one would prefer lighter garments, even if it is cold. Since it is difficult to produce a handgun from under a buttoned-up coat, an oncoming person with an unbuttoned (or half-buttoned) coat in cold weather should cause suspicion. Besides, since it is impossible to pull the trigger in warm gloves, one should pay attention to those, who do not wear gloves and hold hands in the pockets to warm them. Some criminals use gloves with cut off fingers.

If one does not want to burden oneself with superfluous garments, he can place his weapon in a waist-bag. There are holsters in the form of man”s and lady”s handbags. They can be carried with any type of clothing and in all weather.

To detect a concealed weapon one should also pay attention to the body bearing and gestures. The following features should attract attention:

  • Unnatural position of a hand. Its sticking out and immobility may indicate the presence of a handgun under the arm-pit. The hand movements on the side of a handgun are constrained, since the hand instinctively gravitates towards the body as if protecting the weapon.
  • Constrained movements of a leg (if a weapon is concealed on a hip or shin).
  • Feeling and patting down the clothing in the places where weapons are usually carried, to check the weapon”s position and/or reposition it.  For example, when climbing a staircase or a hill, a handgun in a pocket or under the belt may change its position, so the person would try by quick circular movements of his hand to verify retention. While running, a person with a concealed gun is inclined to hold it with his hand.
  • Squatting down instead of stooping to pick something up.
  • Asymmetric gait – a person makes shorter steps on the side, where a handgun is stuck in the belt or pocket.
